Konx Om Pax - also called the Essays in Light - is a selection of writings by Aleister Crowley, named for a phrase said to have been spoken during the Eleusinian Mysteries as a person ascends to become a seer.

Originally published in 1907, this book brings together four of the most poignant, humorous and subtle treatises penned by Crowley. They are as follows

The Wake World

An allegorical account of a magickal practitioner's journey to Kabbalistic Tree of Life, accompanied by a Holy Guardian Angel. Originally written as a bedtime story for his daughter, Crowley would relate himself as the Fairy Prince, after the fashion of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

Thien Tao

A barbed satire in which Crowley is cast as a Taoist advisor to a Japanese Daimyo. As the Daimyo's dominion stands in crisis, Crowley advises a course of education whereby the people are taught to behave as their opposites whores are to be taught celibacy, the pious are to learn of Huxley's materialism, the atheistic are to learn magick, and the sexually prudish are to learn promiscuity.

Ali Sloper ; or, the Forty Liars

A theatrical play which is largely a dialogue between Crowley, a friend, and the friend's wife on Christmas Day. As 'Bowler', Crowley recites an essay named Ameth; a satirical retelling of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves; a classic folk story from the One Thousand and One Nights collection.

The Stone of Mount Abiegnus

A conversation between a series of men, including a socialist and a doctor. Each contributes a piece of poetry to enrich the philosophical debate between them. Crowley appears as "Basil Grey" - this piece is notable for including love poetry such as La Gitana. Overall the dialogue is inspired by the Zohar; a Rabbinic tradition whereby each participant would contribute a commentary.

This edition of Konx Om Pax is complete and unabridged. It also includes the precursor dedication and counter-dedication together with a portrait of the author.

Konx Om Pax Aleister Crowley Books

Read this wonderful, confounding book. Crowley isn't yet in full humbug mode when writing this... he's young and impetuous, full of rage and all the delight of a man straight out of college. He's not setting down orders, he's not giving you instructions, he's having some fun telling you some of his ideas. "Thien Tao" and "The Wake World" are the most important pieces in the book. "Thien Tao" is Crowley's mutant autobiography up to that point. He casts himself as an ancient Chinese sage, and explains the fall of the Golden Dawn in an amazingly subtle, very sharp satirical voice. "The Wake World" is a fairy tale about the progress of the student of Qabalah. It is reminiscent of "The Chymical Marriage of Christian Rosencreuz". This copy was a 1990 reprint, very lush and warm.

Konx Om Pax Aleister Crowley Books Reviews

If you are going to buy an edition of "Konx Om Pax" I recommend this edition. It has been professionally proofread and features everything the higher priced collectors' editions do. It's is slim, affordable and durable; plus it uses the classic cover from the first edition. This is a must-buy for any Crowley devotee.
okay read -
This is now a nicely done edition, but it will do under the circumstances.
I am fond of the contents, all of which you may find in the public domain, but the Thelemic Brethren edition of Konx Om Pax is... not what I had hoped. Don't get me wrong - having a physical version of the works within, at a painless price, is quite nice. It's just rather sloppy in execution. The back cover copy is, well, copied (though with credit) from Wikipedia without editing, so that the little notation used to indicate a need for clarification (Wikipedia's "[by whom?]" tag) was left in. The cover image and the images inside prefacing each work were used without care for resolution; they've been carelessly resized and have the blurry rasterized text to show for it. Special characters were not transcribed properly - the various symbols and Greek letters used in Wake World's poem, for example, are rendered incorrectly. It's okay enough and I do appreciate a new printing, but it makes me want to just stick to my better digital version instead.
Good value for the price.
I would have given it 5 but he writes as if every knows what he's talking about. It was beautifully descriptive. If reality had an imagination it would sound something like what he wrote in this book.
love the cover, love the text
